Recruitment

When someone is interested in joining the fraternity, they should make contact with the fraternity’s Recruitment Chair or President. From there, the fraternity will invite them over to different recruitment events which gives the potential new member an opportunity to meet the brothers and see the fraternity. At the University of Cincinnati, recruitment week takes place at the beginning of the fall, winter, and spring quarters.

After attending a couple of events, if the fraternity agrees that the potential new member is worthy of membership, the fraternity will extend a bid to the individual. A bid is an invitation to membership from a Greek letter organization. A potential new member can do three things with a bid: they can accept the bid which is simply going up to a member of active chapter and saying, “I Accept.” They can deny the bid, which is telling the fraternity I do not want to join the chapter. And lastly, you can hold which is taking some more time to think about your decision. A bid is good for one year after it has been extended.

When a potential new member accepts his bid, he will begin a quarter where he pledges himself on probation to the fraternity, hence the name “Pledge” for the new member. At the University of Cincinnati, pledge quarter is about 8 weeks long. During the pledge quarter, new members are instructed in the rites and rituals of full membership.
